Flatland

flatland-annulus.pngA new axisymmetric multigrid based Stokes solver for compressible flow

The goal of project Flatland was to generate a mantle convection simulation code working on a 2D annulus. The motivation for this was three-fold. The code allowed us to experiment with different Finite-Element discretisation strategies and numerical solution approaches for linear and non-linear problems arising in the context of variable-viscosity convection. Secondly we used it as a test-bed for advanced implementation concepts from Fortran 2003/2008. Last but not least from the geophysical application side we wanted to investigate different models and couplings of mineralogy and rheology inside Earth's mantle. Details on Flantland and the outcomes can be found in the doctoral thesis by Jens Weismüller.
