Crustal Structure below Europe

Seismic waves generated by earthquakes carry a wealth of information on the Earth's interior structure and the earthquake source behaviour. The EU-Quake project is about the calculation of theoretical (synthetic) seismograms for given three-dimensional velocity models and earthquake sources using SeisSol. We try to model and explain field observations at seismological stations on the European continent by considering explicitly the crustal structure.

Finally, by minimizing the difference between synthetic and observed seismograms we try to recover information on the physical properties of the subsurface structure below Europe. The improvement of this knowledge would allow us to better estimate seismic hazard, ground motion amplitudes and consequences of the ground shaking after earthquake events, e.g. via real-time earthquake parameter determination in early-warning systems.
