Numerical and computational aspects of full seismic waveform tomography

Abstract
Seismic tomography is in a transition from methods based on the ray approximation to methods based on the numerical solution of the elastic wave equation in realistically heterogeneous Earth models. The latter approaches - referred to as Full Waveform Inversion - allow us to solve the elastic wave equation with high accuracy, to exploit an unprecedented amount of information and, thus, to obtain better resolved and more realistic tomographic images. While Full Waveform Inversion is theoretically straightforward, it still poses several practical difficulties that are related to the numerical solution of the forward problem and the computation of Frechet derivatives. In this talk I will address some of the most critical numerical and computational difficulties and present practical solutions that we found useful for continental-scale Full Waveform Inversion.
