Glaciology and Ice Dynamics

Description

Ice sheets and glaciers are an essential part of the earth system. They influence the water cycle, the global climate and even crustal deformation. The course will provide the basics of glaciology, as well as introduce ice dynamic principles for different types of glaciers and ice sheet flow. At the end of the course students will know how to interpret glacier reactions for different environmental forcings on a physical basis. Besides lectures, also simple model solutions will be developed in group work.

* Introduction to the basics of glaciology
* Mass balance and climate interaction
* Principles of ice deformation
* Simple models of glacier flow
* Dynamics of ice sheets and ice shelves
