Contents of this course are not fully finalised. The idea is to look at some of the following topics:
- FE method and its relation to minimisation (textbook: Strang & Fix, Why is Stokes a saddle-point problem? What does the inf-sup condition really mean? Quadrature and variational crimes, ...)
- FE modelling using FEniCS
- Multigrid with focus on FE
- Optimisation techniques especially as needed in adjoint problems
- An algorithm for the evaluation of associated Legendre functions
as needed for spherical harmonics
Master students in Geophysics may choose this course as Interdisciplinary Geophysics.
