Programme Description

The International Master's Programme in Geophysics is research-oriented. Many of our alumni continue their career with a PhD. Munich Geophysics is internationally noted for its research expertise in numerical modeling and simulation. Consequently our master's programme places a strong focus on modelling and simulation, and we expect our students to possess a sound background in Mathematics and Physics. Therefore we are interested in recruiting not only students with a background in the geosciences, but equally students from physics, mathematics, or the engineering sciences.

Within the programme students can specialise in one of the following fields: Geodynamics, Seismology or Paleo- and Geomagnetism. These are our the three main research groups.

The courses are organised in a modular fashion according to the European Bologna approach. It is an international programme and all courses are offered in English language (at students' request). Successful graduates of the programme are awarded the degree of Master of Science (M.Sc.). In this respect the new programme replaces the former Diplomstudiengang Geophysik.

The master's programme in Geophysics started in the winter term 2007/2008. It is jointly offered by the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU) and the Technische Universität München (TUM) under the roof of the Munich Geocenter. As lead university of the programme LMU is responsible for student admission and registration.

The programme consists of five mandatory and several elective modules each combining different courses on related topics. A complete description of the modules can be found in our Course Catalogue. The following table gives an overview on the structure of the programme:
