Tuition Fees & Costs of Living

Starting with winter term 2013/2014 there are no longer any tuition fees to be paid by students of Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München. There are, however, the following two fees to be paid per semester. These fees are charged for bachelor and master programs and foreign and domestic students alike.

  • Basic Fee: 62 EUR (Grundbeitrag, formerly Studentenwerksbeitrag)
  • Student Transit Pass: 66,50 EUR (Semesterticket, mandatory basic fee for restricted use, can be upgraded to full use "IsarCard Semester" for an additional 193,00 EUR, costs are for winter term 2017/18)
  • You will need to pay the registration fee (basic fee + student transit pass) within a week of registering (by cash or bank transfer).

Munich is one of the most attractive and popular cities in Germany. Unfortunately this makes it also one of the most expensive as far as costs of living are concerned. Typical costs are

  • Rooms in private housing including utilities: €350–€600
  • Rooms in university housing: €300, or €370 including utilities
  • Health insurance: €80
  • Meals: €200–€250
  • Mobile phone: €15–€30

Thus, please calculate with no less than 700 EUR per month for costs of living. LMU suggests students to calculate with 800 - 1,000 EUR per month.

Scholarships

Geophysics and the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences do not offer scholarships or other financial aids. There might be the possibility to work as a student worker with us, but this depends on job openings being available.

For information on scholarships and financial aids please see the webpages of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD)
