Application Procedure for Foreign Students

The application procedure described below applies to non-German applicants from both EU and non-EU countries. If, however, you hold a bachelor's (not a master's) degree from a German university, you are a 'Bildungsinländer'. If this is the case, please read the description Bewerbungsverfahren für Deutsche Staatsbürger und Bildungsinländer. We suggest that foreign students first consult the web pages of the LMU for international students to get an initial overview on LMU and the German system of higher education.

Please note that it is only possible to start in the masters programme in Geophysics in winter terms. Starting the programme in summer terms is not possible.

Entry Requirements


Candidates for the programme must possess the equivalent of a bachelor's degree (in a programme of at least 6 semesters) with a final grade of at least 3.0 (when translated to the German grading system) in one of the following fields:

  • Geosciences
  • Geophysics
  • Mineralogy
  • Geology
  • Physics
  • Biology
  • Mathematics
  • Engineering Sciences
  • or related subject
Language proficiency

Candidates for the programme must provide proof of very good mastery of the English language. This can be documented by various means.

Standardised Tests:

  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a result of at least 550 points (paper-based test) or 213 points (computer-based test) or 80 points (internet-based test)
  • International English Language Testing Service (IELTS) with a result of at least 6.0 points and no sub-test less than 5.0 points
  • Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE); grade A or B
  • Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE); grade A or B


  • IELTS and TOEFL results should not be older than two years.
  • TOEFL tests other than PBT, CBT and iBT will not be accepted.
  • For TOEFL results please specify code 4464 (Geology) to select the score recipient!

Alternative proofs may be accepted by the board of examiners if a corresponding application is made. A decision on alternative proofs is made on a case-by-case basis. In general a standardised test is preferred. Such proofs might e.g. be

  • a higher education entrance qualification from an institution with English as language of instruction
  • a degree from an higher education institution with English as language of instruction

Overview on Application Procedure, Admission and Registration


  • You direct your application to us, i.e. Munich Geophysics. You do not need to apply at LMU's International Office or at our partner university TUM.
  • Applications are handled via an online portal only. Do not send us emails or letters with your documents at this stage.
  • The application periods for winter term 2019/2020 are listed below:

    EU citizens (excluding Germans and 'Bildungsinländer') 01 March 2019 31 May 2019
  • Our selection committee will start processing applications only after March 1st.
  • The selection committee will decide on your application. If your application is accepted by our committee, we will forward it to LMU's International Office for further processing.
  • Actual admission is the legal privilege of the International Office. If the International Office also approves your application it will issue a notification of admission that we will send to you.
  • Registration, for which your personal appearance is mandatory, then takes place usually in early October.


We only accept applications via our online-portal! (Form available starting 01 November 2018)
  • You do not need to prove proficiency in the German language for admission into our programme.
  • Non-EU applicants will need to provide a financial statement. Here you should explain, how you plan to meet the expenses of your stay in Munich, e.g. scholarship, savings, job, parental support, sponsor, etc. Only a personal statement is required. It is not necessary to submit additional documents, such as bank statements, at this stage.
  • For application we will ask you to supply a statement of purpose. This is part of the online questionnaire. In your statement please present and discuss your academic and career objectives, being as specific as possible with regard to your particular research interests within the field of Geophysics and why you intend to pursue your graduate studies in Munich, Germany. Beyond what is apparent from your transcript of records, describe your preparation for the M.Sc. in Geophysics (research projects in which you have participated, internships within the field, and additional training within related fields). Your statement is an important part of your application. It should be clear, concise and well-crafted.

Required Documents

Besides the data that you need to enter in our online form, application will require the following documents:

  1. Curriculum Vitae
    • Standard CV including all biographical information, complete academic background, professional experience and practical trainings, as well as additional talents, interests and leisure activities.
    • To be uploaded as PDF file in the Personal Information section of our online-portal.
  2. University Certificates
    • The following set of documents is required for application:
      1. Degree certificate(s)
      2. Transcript(s) of Records
      3. APS certificate (if applicable, see below)
      4. Diploma Supplement(s) (if applicable, see below)
    • For the online application these documents need to be submitted as a single PDF file in the Educational Background section of the online form, see the field Upload of Certificates.
    • Please carefully read the following notes:
      • These documents are only needed from institutions of higher education. Please do not upload in our online portal school leaving certificates, etc.
      • They must be provided in their original language
      • and additionally as certified translations into either German or English, if this is not their original language.
      • Applicants from People's Republic of China, Mongolia and Vietnam need to additionally submit the original certificate from the Akademische Prüfstelle (APS) of the respective German Embassy.
      • If our selection committed approves your application, you will need to immediately mail certified copies of these documents (with the exception of the diploma supplement, which is not needed). These copies need to match the scans you uploaded during the online application!
      • Further information on suitable certified translations and certified copies can be found in the following PDF.
    • If your bachelor's degree was issued by a European university:
      • Please also provide your Diploma Supplement, alternatively your Higher Education Achievement Report (HEAR), which incorporates the European Diploma Supplement.
      • Should you not possess a diploma supplement, please explain this fact in the field Additional Comments of the online form.
  3. Proof of English language proficiency
    • To be uploaded as PDF file in the Language Proficiency section of our online-portal.
