Geosensor Project Page

The Geosensor project aims at the development of sensors that can measure rotational ground motions with a resolution sufficiently high to detect earthquake-induced rotational motions. The project is funded within the framework of the "Geotechnology" Program of the German Ministry of Research and Education. The first project phase (2001-2005) aimed at establishing the consistency of the observed rotations, the technical development of the Geosensor and its installation in a seismically active region. The second phase (2005-2008, proposal submitted) aims at further understanding the new observable "rotation" in connection with Earth's structure, earthquake properties and ground motion. On the technical side we aim at increasing the domain of applications by developing a mobile sensor that can be used close to seismic sources (e.g. in aftershock regions).
