Tuition Fees & Costs of Living

Studying at a German university is no longer free of charge in all cases. Several German states have introduced tuition fees at their universities. Among these is the Free State of Bavaria. Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München currently charges the following fees per semester:

  • Tuition Fee: 500 EUR
  • Basic Fee: 42 EUR (formerly Studentenwerksbeitrag)

These fees are charged for bachelor and master programs and foreign and domestic students alike. Students with a scholarship by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) are exempt from the tuition fee.

Munich is one of the most attractive and popular cities in Germany. Unfortunately this makes it also one of the most expensive as far as costs of living are concerned. Typical costs are

  • 350 EUR minimum for private housing
  • 50 - 200 EUR for basic health insurance (depending on income)
  • about 40 EUR for public transport pass per month
  • ...

Thus, please calculate with no less than 700 EUR per month for costs of living. LMU suggests students to calculate with 800 - 1,000 EUR per month.

Scholarships

Geophysics and the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences do not offer scholarships or other financial aids. There might be the possibility to work as a student worker with us, but this depends on job openings being available.

For information on scholarships and financial aids please see the webpages of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD)
