Please note that enrolment into the master's programme in Geophysics
is possible only for the winter term. Enrolment in the summer term is not possible.
Entry Requirements

Candidates for the programme must possess the equivalent of a
bachelor's degree (in a programme of at least 6 semesters) with a
final grade of at least 3.0 (when
translated to the German grading system) in one of the following
fields:
- Geosciences
- Geophysics
- Mineralogy
- Geology
- Physics
- Biology
- Mathematics
- Engineering Sciences
- or related subject

Candidates for the programme must provide proof of very good
mastery of the English language. This can be documented by various
means.
Standardised Tests:
- Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a result of
at least 550 points (written test) or 213 points (computer-based
test) or 80 points (internet-based test)
- International English Language Testing Service (IELTS) with a
result of at least 6.0 points and no sub-test less than 5.0
points
- Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE); grade A or B
- Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE); grade A
or B
Alternative proofs may be accepted by the board of
examiners if a corresponding application is made. This might e.g.
be a
- higher education entrance qualification from an institution
with English as language of instruction
- degree from an higher education institution with
English as language of instruction
- a bachelor's thesis written in the English language
However, in general a standardised test is definitely
preferred.

Application Procedure
Please start by downloading and completing our
application form. It also contains
additional information on the following documents that you must supply
together with your application
- Application Form
- Curriculum Vitae
- Statement of Purpose
- Financial Statement
- Copy of degree certificate(s) (only from institutions of higher
education, i.e. no school leaving certificates, etc.)
- Copy of transcript(s) of records (same remark as above)
- Proof of English language proficiency
Once we received your application
- A selection committee consisting of the members of the board of
examiners will decide on your application.
- You will then be informed on the decision via email. In case of a
positive review by the selection committee your documents are passed
on to the International Office of LMU.
- LMU will then check that your documents and papers are issued by
proper universities and real. Only after this check formal enrolment
will be possible.
Remarks
- All details must be proven by enclosing officially certified/attested
certificates/supporting documents and officially certified/attested
German or English translations. We will not process documents in other
languages.
- You do not need to prove proficiency in the German language for admission
into our programme.
- You do not need to apply with the university administration directly.
If your application is approved by our committee, we will forward it
to the department of international affairs of the university for
further processing.
- In the financial statement you should explain, how you plan to
meet the expenses of your stay in Munich, e.g. scholarship, savings, job,
parental support, sponsor, etc. Only a personal statement is required. It is
not necessary to submit additional documents, such as bank statements, at this
stage.
- Independent of the outcome of your application we will not return
any documents supplied by you.
Application by Email
It is possible to apply be email. In this case please note the
following:
- If you apply by email, paper versions of your documents will be required
at a later stage of the admission procedure.
- We will only accept documents in PDF format. Word documents will not
be processed! Word users: Please consider one of the free PDF converters
(such as e.g. FreePDF XP) or use
LibreOffice, which offers direct PDF export.
- Make sure the documents you send have your family name as the first part
of the document name. Example: Your family name is Mohr, than
your CV should be named
mohr_cv.pdf. You may also provide all
documents in a single PDF file called YourFamilyName_application.pdf (Please do not use spaces in your file names!)

Deadlines & Time-line
- Applications for winter term 2012/2013 must be received before
31st of May 2012.
- We attempt to process your application as soon as possible. However,
the admission committee will only decide once a sufficient number of
applications has accumulated. If you fulfil the entry requirements, we
will issue a letter of qualification and forward it together
with your documents to the International Office of LMU.
- Actual admission is the legal privilege of the International Office.
Based on the letter of qualification and maybe additional
documents we might ask you for the International Office will issue a
document of approval that we will send you.
- Enrolment itself, for which your personal appearance is mandatory,
then takes place usually in early October.
